A fun inaugural 43rd ward bike ride!

by Michelle Stenzel

On the last Saturday in June, on the final day of the 43rd Ward Green Week, Alderman Michele Smith and her staff led an inaugural 43rd ward bike ride! It was a beautiful warm, sunny morning.

The route was easy and chosen to showcase how many streets we have that are safe and beautiful for riding bikes.

Performance Bicycles in Lincoln Park set up a tent with technicians ready to make minor repairs or help out with a flat tire (Bike Walk Lincoln Park co-chair Michael Reynolds is the store manager).

Carlin Thomas of CDOT (in red T-shirt, right) started us with a talk on proper helmet fitting and good signalling techniques.

Alderman Smith (at left) welcomed the group and voiced her commitment to making bicycling in the ward safe for everyone. She emphasized her interest in making sure we have neighborhood routes that people can use for short distances to travel to destinations like the grocery store or school.

We set off from the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and wound slowly through the streets of Lincoln Park.

Here's a video for you to enjoy:

Thank you to Alderman Smith and her staff for leading the ride, and we look forward to more rides in the future!
